How to Welcome Autumn with Tarot in Toronto & Beyond

Autumn is coming

Autumn is coming, time to curl up with my Tarot cards, look within, and imagine the possibilities

Autumn is Coming

I am one of those people who wears sandals until the last possible moment. I will sit on a patio with heat lamps and a coat on until I can’t feel my fingers anymore. I’d rather be cold than admit defeat and bring out my serious winter coat. Let’s just say, despite the fact that I was born and raised in Canada, cold weather makes me irrationally angry and I lament the end of summer every year.

That being said, the magical time that we have in Toronto between Labour Day and Hallowe’en (if we’re lucky) has a special place in my heart. I love this time of transition, it’s not yet truly cold, but you can feel the change in the air…I start to think about the entire range of pumpkin-based food and beverages, what I’m going to be for Hallowe’en (yes, I still dress up!), and the idea of curling up with a blanket and a book seems like the next best thing to being on a beach.  I fight the coming of the cold weather, but something about the energy of early Autumn really resonates with me.

Autumn and Tarot

I find that Autumn is a wonderful time to explore the Tarot. This season makes me even more introspective than usual, and there is a feeling of approaching the end of another cycle, thinking about where you are in your life and where you want to be. It’s a natural time to look within and heal, to reflect on the past year and to make plans and goals for the upcoming one.

When it comes to Tarot, the suit of Pentacles is traditionally associated with Autumn. Pentacles are earth cards, connected with fertility, prosperity, career/work, health, material comforts and nature. Many of the Pentacle cards have the common theme of seeds being planted, foundations being laid, and now we are waiting to see what will grow. There are many wonderful Tarot spreads that you can explore in the fall (I particularly like the ones explained by Barbara Moore here http://www.llewellyn.com/journal/article/1753), and I personally enjoy using the Pentacles cards to spark journal entries or to help me to plan for the upcoming New Year.

Pentacles and Making Future Plans and Goals

At or around the Equinox, I set aside some quiet time for myself (phone off, email closed) and pull the following cards from my deck: the Ace of Pentacles, the Six, Seven and Ten of Pentacles, and the Queen of Pentacles. You can choose any of the Pentacles that resonate with you, and that match the best with the goals that you are hoping to achieve. Take a really good look at each card, quiet your mind and just let your eyes explore the rich imagery. When you’re ready, record your thoughts in your journal.

When I’m connecting with the cards, I consider these questions:

Ace of PentaclesAce of Pentacles: How can I develop the ideas and potential I have for my own prosperity?

Six of PentaclesSix of Pentacles: How can I best use my resources to help others?

Seven of PentaclesSeven of Pentacles: What seeds have I planted and what do I hope will grow?

Ten of PentaclesTen of Pentacles: What legacy do I want to create for myself and my family?

Queen of PentaclesQueen of Pentacles: How can I be more grounded and comfortable with who I am?

This is a really nice way to connect with your Tarot cards, with your own inner voice, and to help to articulate your hopes and dreams in a more concrete way. When the weather starts to get chilly, curl up with your cards, your journal, and let your imagination free! I’d love to hear what you come up with, and how you honour the coming of Autumn.
