What you need to KNOW, GROW and LET GO – A Tarot Spread

I have been doing a lot of email readings lately, and I love it. I love the feeling of snapping into a connection with the person I’m reading for, of laying out the cards and seeing and experiencing the story that plays out there. I love producing a creation that they can read as many times as they like, refer back to when they need to…

I did a concise reading for someone this morning…it was a big, universal, life lesson question, and yet the structure of that particular reading allows for only a few cards. Practical concerns aside, I really wanted to get the answer that client was looking for, I wanted to dive deep, so I thought about how I could do that in a compact format.

As I often do, I turned to the trusty three card spread, and this is what I came up with. (It is similar to a New Moon spread I made last month – here is that one.). I had to laugh at the very pragmatic spread that came to my mind, so simple, and yet I was so happy with the results.

The “What you need to KNOW, GROW and LET GO” Tarot Spread

What you need to know, grow and let go

This spread can be used when you are just doing a general check in with yourself and how you are feeling, or you can explore a particular issue or area of your life.

Here is an example that I did for myself (my clients’ readings are private, of course). I asked generally for insight about my business for the coming months. Here’s my interpretation, but I’d love to hear your thoughts as well:

  1. What do I need to know: The Hermit

  2. What needs to grow: The Hierophant

  3. What can I let go of: Judgement

The cards, it seems, are not without a sense of humor. I chose a simple spread, a practical question, and despite the fact that I used the entire deck, all Major Arcana came up. So, this may be a more significant question that I had anticipated.

hermitSo what do I need to know about my business in the coming months…the Hermit. It looks like I will be spending a lot of time on my own, that this is the right time to reflect on how things are going and where I want to go from here. I see myself in that Hermit doing a lot of writing, working by myself, creating materials that I then send out into the world. I am usually OK with being in the Hermit place, but since I’ve been pushing myself to do a lot of networking events and “get myself out there” it is interesting that the Hermit appears! The message I am getting is that in order for my business to move forward, its time to do some reflection and soul searching. What do I really want? What am I willing to sacrifice? What do I want to find within myself and share with the world? These are questions I will be thinking about and writing about for the next while.

hierophantSo what do I need to grow in my business in the coming months…the Hierophant. Interesting again! I see both the Hermit and the Hierophant as teacher archetypes, but their approach is different. The Hermit is internal, solitary, while the Hierophant is outward, in front of people. This card has come up for me before, telling me that I need to grow into my role as teacher and communicator, even though I am often happier as the Hermit. It seems that I need to find some balance between these two roles, and to honor them equally. On a practical note, I should line up more speaking opportunities and classes, to look for ways that I can share what I do with people.

judgementSo what can I let go of…Judgement. This is a big card, a card of following your passion, doing what you’re meant to do, letting go of the past and being reborn. I went through this process when I decided to do Tarot professionally…it was a calling that I couldn’t ignore, and yet it was terrifying. I was aware of the impact that this decision would have on my life, and how it would impact the lives of the people I love. Perhaps its time to let go of this feeling that everything I am doing has a HUGE impact on me, on the future, and just live in the moment. Time to trust that I am on the right path towards completion of my goal (in the World card which follows Judgement) and just get on with it. If you see every action as being life changing, it can be paralyzing! I’m going to trust that I have already done the hard part, reinventing myself, and now I can really enjoy the ride. Maybe there’s even an angel or two watching over me.

Wow, that took a lot out of me! Never underestimate the power that a simple, three card spread can have. They are usually really good at telling it like it is, at providing the clear, no frills information that you need. You can expand this spread if you need to, by adding a further clarifying card for each position, but please make sure that you suck all you can out of those first three cards before you rush to draw more.

I’d love to hear your interpretation of my spread, and let me know how this spread works for you.

I want to read your cards for you! Are you ready to try an email reading?

Ready to take the plunge into something more intense?

    Great reading, Lori!
Here’s my feedback, since you asked 🙂

Don’t forget that Hermit’s lantern. Maybe you’re supposed to be a light for others to follow, leading them out of the dark, rather than going into isolation yourself.

Also, I think of the Hierophant as someone who advocates following society’s more conventional path. Maybe you’re going to go more main stream – reading at corporate events/seminars, writing a column, or teaching at a community college?

Judgement? I agree wholeheartedly! Do exactly what it says and let go of self-judgement. You’re already a Star!

Thanks for your insights, Lynda! I like what you said about the Hierophant, that’s good advice. Also, I feel like I may need to go down that conventional path until I discover what MY unique Tarot offering for the world is…until then, I’m happy to teach and practice what I know. But I feel sure that in future I’ll be able to make a unique contribution. 🙂

What I need to let go of – ace of pentacles
I haven’t got a clue as to how to interpret this. Any insight or advice?

    • innergoddesstarot August 8, 2020 at 4:37 pm #

What does that Pentacle represent for you? Is this a purchase you want to make? A gift you want to give or receive? A job you’ve been pursuing? A fixation on money? You are holding a big gold coin in your hand but is time to let go of it…think about what that might be.

      • chaseparker August 8, 2020 at 5:17 pm #

was my first thought was the erection of my own business / my second was a pair of Chanel tennis shoes (knowingly unattainable and no true want for them other than the idea) / third was a relationship with someone that already ended for good reason and only would allow a level of toxicity that would eat me alive, but pentacles represent materialism, right? could that person be the coin? I mean my plan is to create my own business but i’ve not yet executed any sort of path or business plan and its all in my head right now. i sit here and repeat this idea to myself over and over and my busines may be unplanned and entirely fictional as of now but I get anxiety when I think of having the other. maybe my first card- to know being -the lovers and the second to grow being reversed high priestess might help you help me clue into it more?

perhaps its the influence of any sort of thought dealing with money or tangibility integrated into a business rather than doing out of pure passion and doing it for me?

    2 of wands – grow
