June 21st, 2019 marks the Summer Solstice here in our dear Northern Hemisphere, also celebrated as Midsummer and Litha.
The Solstice marks the longest day and the shortest night of the year.
What do you think of when I say, “That was one of the longest days of my life.”? Negative connotations arise, don’t they? Usually the implication is that a particular incident has gone on too long (many, many committee and staff meetings come to mind) and has become tiresome. Or, perhaps it was a time of fear or adrenaline, a situation that we are hoping and praying will come to a happy end. Or, a time of celebration when we celebrated a little too much.
The Solstice can have that kind of energy. It is a time of heightened awareness, an energy that is difficult to sustain for long.
As we approach the Solstice, the energy starts to amp up. The Sun grows in strength, the flowers burst into bloom, the fire in our bellies gets stronger, until we reach the peak, the time when the Sun is at the full height of its power.
After that peak, the energy of the Sun starts to wane, the days get shorter, somewhere in our hearts and minds we know that the time of cold and darkness will return, so we make the most of our time in the light.
Now is a good time to check in with the energy of the sun. Ask yourself, how am I shining in my life? What am I casting a shadow over? What is coming into bloom, and what may be coming to an end, as I enter this new cycle? Ride the momentum as we approach the Solstice, and then flow with it as it starts to subside.
Here is a Tarot spread I created this year to interpret the energy and messages that are all around you right now.
