The Sun Tarot Card and the Summer Solstice

June 20, 2022

What is your relationship with the Sun?

Many people who love the Tarot consider themselves to be Moon people. The Moon is the realm of intuition, psychic insights, dreams and inner exploration, after all. There is delicious mystery in the Moon, and an invitation to go deep and to seek wisdom through reflection.

The Sun is a different story. The Sun is bright, clear, and leaves nothing hidden. Rather than going within, the Sun invites us to go outwards, to take action, and be seen, to SHINE.

When the Summer Solstice comes around, I think about these things. I am a Tarot reader, and an introvert, and it is easy for me to get lost in my thoughts and imaginings, and to forget how to operate in the outside world.

Can you relate?

The Solstice reminds you to venture out, to expand, and to reveal yourself. The energy of the Sun brings your desires and ambitions to the surface, and there is the opportunity to get fired up and explore what you are really passionate about.

And that’s pretty spectacular.

Make the most of this solar energy, this atmosphere of fertility and growth, to get excited about yourself, your life, and your possibilities.

To get started on that, have a look at the Tarot Sun Card.

How did you feel when you looked at it?

What was the first word that popped into your mind?

Was there a particular aspect of the card that caught your eye? The Sun itself, the sunflowers, the happy child, the white horse?

How does it feel to open your arms wide, like that child, and embrace all of the blessings that the universe has to offer you?

Let’s explore the Sun card together.

Our Tarot Sun is pure joy. It is a flower unfurling and blossoming after the winter. It is you, awakening to the full glory of who you really are.

After your journey through challenges and shadowy places, you turn your face up to the sun and know the bliss of simply being alive.

On the card, a bright yellow sun with rays that pulse and fills the sky looks right at you.

Sunflowers, those outrageous blossoms that defy the force of gravity, peek up and over the stone wall, trying to reach that source of life.

A golden-haired child sits on a patient horse with their arms outstretched, inviting in all the light and joy that the sun has to offer, reaching out to embrace the world and everything in it. That child should be vulnerable, being so small and naked, but we know that the horse is going to keep them out of harm’s way. The child was safe in that walled garden, but life is too big to stay in there, they had to leap over the wall, and into the world, to experience more.

The red feather that the baby wears has also been on a journey. It started at full strength with the Fool, it waned and wilted with Death, and now it has returned to its full vigor.

The child waves a red banner because getting to this point in the cards, and in life, is a victory that should be celebrated. The child is a herald, sending out a message of joy and love, declaring that life is beautiful, we are loved, and we are all connected to the source energy that feeds all things. We follow them and ride triumphantly towards the end of the Major Arcana, to the culmination of the journey, and yet everything feels new.

Imagine what it feels like to be that happy child. Sit down, and stretch your arms and legs out wide, like you’re waiting for someone you love to lean in and hug you. Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. Smile, giggle like a baby, there is no reason to feel self-conscious, just let yourself be open to joy and present in this exact moment.

Meaning in a reading:

The Sun has a simple meaning. Joy.

There are opportunities for joy around you, allow them into your life, and embrace them. Enjoy all the blessings that the universe is sending your way, and know that you are worthy of them.

You’ve been through many shadows and challenges, but now everything is clear, and you can dare to be happy. Be reborn, be whoever you want to be, and bask in how good it is to be alive. Do what energizes you and what you find engaging, give your soul what it needs to thrive.

If you radiate positivity and joy out into the world, people will be drawn to you. They will see you, and admire you for who you are and everything you do. Employers or clients suddenly recognize and appreciate your talents. Friends can’t get enough of you. Family adores you. Your partner only has eyes for you. When the Sun appears, it is like you are a golden child, good fortune will shine on you, and you can do no wrong, at least while the sun is up.

If you are an introvert, like me:

Introverts are often more comfortable in the shadowy and introspective cards, the lunar worlds of the High Priestess, the Hermit, and the Moon. We could stay in those cards forever. But we too need sunshine to live and to thrive.

Even if the prospect is daunting, let yourself be seen. Make friends with that solar energy. Show off your talents (and your faults) and expect to be admired. Anticipate the best rather than imagining the worst. In fact, leave your ruminations aside, and give your mind the day off, enjoy where you are right now. Have a good look at yourself, put aside the stories you tell yourself and how you imagine yourself to be, and see how glorious you really are.

Questions for reflection and journaling:

What blessings can I wholeheartedly receive right now?
What can I do today just for the purpose of bringing me joy?
What do I love and appreciate about myself?

Affirmation:

I joyfully receive all the blessings that the universe is sending to me.
