The moon is a powerful ally in all our magical work. Its energy pulls us like the tides, impacting us emotionally and physically. If you feel an affinity with the moon, it’s beneficial and natural to flow with her cycles and make the most of that momentum and support when crafting your spell or ritual. As a bonus, you’ll honor the moon and deepen your relationship with its energies as you work your talisman magic. Get outside, look up, and appreciate the moon. Those energies will work to enhance your magic.
Each phase of the moon is suited to a particular type of intention and magic.
To decide which one suits you best, first consider whether the magic you’re working aims to increase or decrease, invite or banish, or
bring something to fruition or an end.
Waxing Phases
The waxing phases of the moon support magical work focused on increasing abundance, inviting in blessings, and bringing things to fruition.
The new moon occurs when the sun, earth, and moon are aligned, with the moon in the middle. The part of the moon illuminated by the sun doesn’t face the earth at this time, so the moon is invisible to us. This is the first lunar phase and the beginning of the lunar cycle, making it ideal for magic involving new beginnings, setting intentions, taking first steps, and planting seeds you intend to nurture.
After the new moon, the light increases and the moon becomes brighter and more visible. The phase between the new moon and the Full Moon is called
the waxing moon. Energy rises and increases during this lunar phase. Work with this phase if your intention is to grow and expand something in your life, whether that is love, money, career success, or confidence—anything you want more of. As the moon grows in strength, so does your magic. The waxing moon can also provide an extra push or motivation to complete a project or reach a goal.
Full Moon
The Full Moon occurs when the sun and the moon are aligned on opposite sides of the earth. At this time, the moon’s sunlit side faces the earth, so it appears fully bright and magnificently illuminated to us. This lunar phase adds light and power to any magical work. The Full Moon is a spectacle that captures our hearts and imaginations. We watch it slowly grow in intensity through the waxing phases, and we feel its energy rising. When the Full Moon appears in all its glory, we share in the triumph and appreciate the beauty of the process.
The Full Moon represents the culmination of intentions, efforts coming to fruition, and fully achieving your desire. Its luminosity reveals what is hidden
or unclear, and invites you to shine at your full strength. The light of the Full Moon clears stagnant energy and charges you up, while adding power to divination and psychic practices. If your intention for your magic involves completing a long journey, or wrapping up a project that’s taken years to complete, or succeeding on a path of healing you’ve been following for some time, then this is a beautiful time to work your magic.
Waning Phases
The moon’s waning phases support work focused on decreasing, banishing, or endings. The waning moon falls in the period between the Full Moon and the new moon, when the illuminated surface of the moon decreases. After the intensity of the Full Moon, the waning moon invites introspection and retreating within to integrate what was revealed or achieved during the fullness of the moon. It has a gentle energy that asks you to rest and release what no longer serves.
With its downward, decreasing flow of energy, this lunar phase supports magic to help you release, repel, and banish situations and behaviors from your life. As the moon fades into darkness, let unwanted energies, thoughts, or patterns steadily diminish, so that you are ready for a fresh start with the new moon.
The Dark Moon marks the point at which the barely visible waning crescent disappears just before the new moon rises. This is the final phase of the lunar
cycle, so it represents a pause and an ending. Take advantage of this time to rest, to practice self-care, to pull some tarot cards, and to look within. This isn’t the best time to start something new; instead, release what no longer benefits you. This lunar phase encourages you to reflect on your magical intention and consider if you need to adjust, refocus, or expand it. But if your intention involves instigating a significant ending or banishing or binding a negative force in your life, consider working with this quiet and contemplative moon.
