In October, when the veil between the worlds feels particularly thin, my mind often goes to melancholy places. I adore Autumn, and even though I might feel sad occasionally, I welcome this month that encourages reflection on who we are now, who we were, and where we are heading.
October is a natural time for shadow work – a term used to describe the process of exploring the hidden or ‘shadow’ aspects of our personality. It’s a time to take a kindly look at the sides of ourselves that we usually keep hidden. One way to do this is by exploring a Tarot card that you find scary, challenging, or sad.
People often think certain cards are scary or bad, especially if you’re new to Tarot.
At first glance, how can the Hanged Man be good? He’s in an uncomfortable position, hung upside down, unable to free himself. Or is he? The halo around his head shows he is experiencing enlightenment, and his relaxed pose reminds us of the ease of surrendering, being present, and relaxing into your current situation.
And the Death card! How can that bring good fortune? The Death card does foreshadow a significant ending, but it also promises rebirth and the shedding of what no longer matters.
How about the Tower? Well, this card does bring disruption and fate pulling the metaphorical rug out from under you, but it offers liberation and the chance to rebuild your life on a firmer foundation.
Perhaps the Suit of Swords appears sharp and painful, but these cards offer clarity.
Is there a particular card, Major or Minor, that you find scary? Give yourself a moment to reflect on that.
Your card may have always rubbed you the wrong way. Or, it might be a card that illustrates a challenge you are facing right now.
Find that card in the deck and lay it in front of you. Let your eyes gently roam over the details. Let your mind go where it wants to go.
Then, give this spread a try and go deeper. You will choose the FIRST card actively; the rest, shuffle and let the universe decide.

Be kind to yourself and remember you are both light and shadow – both are necessary and valuable. Embrace your journey with kindness and acceptance, and let the cards guide you towards self-discovery and growth.
