The Hierophant: The Universal Tarot Year Card for 2021 & what that means for you

Thank goodness 2020 is almost over.

I had to stop for a moment there, and breathe, and feel all the feelings.

I’m tired. I’m grateful. I’m anxious. I’m optimistic.

This brutal year has almost come to a close, and we find ourselves at the cusp of change, filled with all of the regular New Year feelings amplified by a million.

At this time of year, we reflect on the year that is about to come to completion. We think about the things that we feel good about, and we ruminate on the things we regret and have lost. This can be a wistful time, more than ever we are aware of the passage of time, and all that entails.

We start to look to the year ahead, to make resolutions, to think about what we want to achieve.

And 2020 has been a year unlike any other.

It may feel difficult at this time to make plans for the future, and to approach the new year with unbounded confidence and cheerfulness. And that’s ok. But, I invite you to shift into a place of cautious optimism, and let that small spark of excitement be lit in your heart. Let’s go into 2021 with the expectation that life will be good and you can make your goals and dreams a reality.

Before we take a look at the Universal Tarot Year Card for 2021, let’s look back at 2020.

The Tarot card that represents 2020 is The Emperor. (2+0+2+0= 4).

Emperor Tarot card

So how has this energy played out so far?

We have seen both the good and the bad side of the Emperor this year.

We have seen a world leader who tried to undermine the democracy of his country, and seemed to envision himself as an Emperor rather than a President.

We have seen the election of new leaders who are taking responsibility for the well-being and enrichment of the people in their care and under their sacred trust.

We have seen politicians and experts step up and do what needs to be done to get us through this pandemic, and also leaders who have failed to do so.

We have seen ordinary people make great sacrifices in order to follow the rules that will protect their fellow beings from illness.

We have seen people who have risen up because they have had enough of bad leadership, oppression, racism, and disregard for the state of our climate and our planet.

These themes of taking responsibility for our actions, honorable leadership, and acting for the greater good rather than doing whatever we want have all strongly come into play. Also, we have felt the deep impact of instability in our daily lives, an impact that is going to be there long after 2020 has passed.

The Tarot card that represents 2021 is The Hierophant. (2+0+2+1=5).

How do you feel when you look at that image?

The Hierophant is another card of strong authority that we are not supposed to question, of hierarchy and patriarchy.

But also, the Hierophant is a card of wisdom, tradition, and institutions that support and sustain us, body and soul.

The Hierophant bears the number five, which is a card of challenge and hardship that can bring growth and achievement if overcome.

So, it feels like the year ahead will bring challenges, and we will have to call upon our collective wisdom and knowledge to navigate it. We will have to think carefully about what we want to create, rather than falling back into old patterns or going backwards in our quest for security and safety.

We will need to listen to what the experts tell us, and use our discernment so that we can see who truly are the experts, who are the ones who have the best interests of the world as their motivation rather than falling under the spell of charismatic and egotistical leaders.

I hope that there will be kindness, kind leadership, compassion and an understanding of the human experience. As well as a desire to serve, and to be open to divine guidance in our daily lives.

I hope that we will all be uplifted by the Hierophant, that the challenges that we face will lead us to a time of spiritual renewal and increased knowledge.

What do you believe The Hierophant will bring?

Wishing you a peaceful and joyful 2021.
