This is what I feel like this morning. I want to draw in my energy, hold it within myself. I feel a little vulnerable, I want to wrap myself in a blanket and be cozy and held. I want to feel the earth solid and supportive beneath my feet. I want to keep a level head and a calm heart.
On one level, I have to pay my taxes shortly, so that makes me feel vulnerable and stirs up all kind of money issues and anxieties. On another level, this cold Monday morning is making me feel small. So my card of the day, the Four of Pentacles, is spot on.
I find the Four of Pentacles so fascinating. On the surface, we see someone who is holding on to their money or possessions, and holding on tight. Our minds may jump to the conclusion that this is a miserly person, someone who isn’t willing to share the wealth. This may be the case, but I think you’re limiting yourself as a reader if you immediately default to this meaning.
Sometimes, isn’t it a good idea to hang onto what you need, to be mindful of your resources, to keep what’s yours? The key is to find balance. Understand what you need to hold onto to feel secure, without being ruled by fear. Be sensible and practical with your money, and be generous when you can.

Here’s what I posted for my Today’s Tarot Message on Facebook:
What are you holding on to so tightly? You are building a foundation of security and abundance in your life, but today you may be feeling like it’s not enough, that there is a need to hang on to what you have out of fear of loss, change or risk. Today is a good day to examine your relationship with money…you may be blocking the flow of prosperity through an attitude of scarcity or insecurity. Good day to shift a mindset that is causing stagnation. Today it is important to take care of yourself and keep what you need, but try not to lose your sense of generosity and openness with others.
Look at how the figure on the card holds those Pentacles: on the crown, over the heart like a shield, held in place firmly with his feet. We are going beyond money and material things here, we’re getting into issues of the Root chakra, basic survival, feeling safe and secure in our home and environment and in our bodies.
The figure on the card is rock solid, and yet nothing is happening. Notice that neutral gray background on the card, the figure is in stasis, limbo. He will have to release his grip to grow or expand or move forward.
When this card comes up, I ask myself, what do I need to feel secure? Do I feel under attack in some way? Is there disharmony in the home that needs to be addressed? Do I need to do something physical to reconnect with my personal power? Am I spending money when I should be doing some inner reflection instead? What can I do to make my environment more conducive to peace of mind and comfort?
Being the suit of Pentacles, we are in the world of money, the home, the body, slow growth, abundance, good health.
Being a Four, we have solidity, security, a strong foundation. Consolidation rather than movement.
So what might the Four of Pentacles represent in regards to a specific topic?
Four of Pentacles in Love: Someone is feeling the need to protect themselves, is that you or your partner? There is an unwillingness to open up, to create space and open communication. Is one partner trying to hang on to the other one a little too tightly? Address any issues of insecurity or possessiveness in the relationship.
Four of Pentacles in Career or Finances: Be mindful of spending, this is not a time for frivolous purchases or for being overly generous with others who may be in financial difficulties. At work, your position feels secure, hold your place, consolidate, establish your value before you look for promotion or salary increases.
Four of Pentacles in Well-being and personal growth: There is a risk of stagnation here. Acknowledge what you have achieved, and continue to nurture your success, but don’t strangle future growth through a desire to hold on to what you have. Bring some balance in your life, between practicality and adventure, body and mind.

When the Four of Pentacles appears, you are invited to explore your relationship with money, with your body, with what it takes to make you feel safe and secure. May you create your cozy nest for yourself, so that you have the courage to fly free when the time is right.
